Artist Statement
Observation and drawing constitute the basis of my work.
Being surprised by candid moments such as a person’s shadow
on a wall or my daughter holding a cup of tea, prompts me
to do quick sketches. Since 25 years, I am working on
a “library of personal daily epiphanies” consisting of hundreds
of A6 sketchbooks. Some of these drawings become the starting point of paintings and prints. With a strong connection to the particular experience: the light, scent, conversation at the time and most importantly, an acute sense of place, I am translating quick pencil drawing into close chromatic colours on wooden panels, in order to give to these specific — yet universal relatable! — moments an icon-like presence.
For 13 years prior to working in egg tempera painting, I solely concentrated on etching in black and white. In a similar scale and fashion to the painting, I have been transcribing drawings into
a web of close tones. Now I want to make the leap to colour etching and lithography, with the aim of creating similar sensual visual experiences yet in chromatic colours.
